Transport
Transportation is moving (transporting) people or goods from place A to place B. In the case of goods transport, transport can be carried out by various means of transport. By land, this can be by bus, truck or train. By water, it can be by barge or container ship and by air by plane. The choice of transport type depends on the size and packaging type of the goods, the destination and when the transport needs to be at this destination.
Companies that organise transport for clients (shippers) are carriers or freight forwarders. Freight forwarders are intermediaries who do not necessarily provide the transport themselves with their own means of transport but place transport orders with transport companies, shipping companies or airlines.
What is a carrier?
Transporters specialise in transporting goods. To this end, transport licences are required to operate as a transporter. For instance, for transporters operating internationally in professional road haulage, a Euro licence is a requirement. Transport companies that also operate in countries outside the EU, a CEMT licence is recommended.
Transporters and forwarders are increasingly using a digital transport management system (TMS) to support the export of goods transport. In a TMS, the preparation and planning of routes can be recorded and adjusted, the progress of a transport can be consulted and communicated, and the financial and administrative handling of a transport can be provided. Above all, more and more relevant data is extracted from the TMS to work smarter and more efficiently and provide management information on which a company can be managed and remain successful.
