What is logistics?

Logistics is more than transport from A to B alone. It is an umbrella term for everything involved in organising, planning and controlling the flow of goods and associated administrative flow from A to Z. In order to improve logistics processes and carry them out as efficiently as possible, the entire process from the moment raw materials are purchased to the moment the finished product goes to the consumer is mapped out. This entire journey is also called the 'logistics chain' or in English 'supply chain'. A short definition of logistics is "getting the right things, at the right time, in the right place, in the right quantities at minimum cost". This involves striking a balance between often difficult to reconcile objectives: on the one hand, cost minimisation or low capital use is desired, while on the other, customer service maximisation is sought.
